fastest way to data transfer between macbook pro (mid 2009) and air (2015)

Hi.

I have a macbook pro (mid 2009) and want to transfer my data to my new mac air (2015). I have tried using migration assist, but it always hangs around the 20mins left mark. I also bought a thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable, only to realize that macbook pro (2009) does not have this port.

Also, how can i transfer my microsoft word app to the new mac, which does not have a cd drive?

Any suggestions on how i can do all this?

Thanks in advance!

Connect the two computer via FireWire. You will need a Thunderbolt>FW adopter for the new Mac. The boot the old Mac in Target Disk Mode (boot while holding the T key)

Use optical disk sharing and use the optical drive on the old Mac
