Q: Safari 8.0.8 Constantly hanging

Running Yosemite 10.10.5 and Safari 8.0.8 on MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) - for past few weeks and especially last two weeks Safari is constantly "not responding" and/or "Safari Web Content Not Responding" - on almost every webpage I try to go to.  This has consumed tons of time. I Force Quit and report to Apple many times each day. I don't believe I have any Safari Plug-Ins.  Was going to update to latest version but waiting because I always back up my iPhone & iPad before updates & when tried to do that iTunes is saying both "require" encryption which I don't want or need so have been working with Applecare since last Friday to resolve that and the engineers are still trying to figure it out. In meantime my work is drastically hampered due to Safari. I'm desperate for help.  On Firefox now to even get this posted. Please advise!

    Anti-virus software is notoroius for messing up Safari. If you have any, uninstall it.

     

    So-called "cleaning/optimizing/tune-up" apps will make a mess of your system.

     

    It is Safari extensions that can be more troublesome than plug-ins. Do Safari Preferences and click the "Extensions" tab. If any extensions are shown, turn them all off, resatart Safari,i and test.

    Safari/Preferences/Advanced - enable the Develop menu, then go there and Empty Caches. Quit/reopen Safari and test. Then try Safari/History/Show History and delete all history items.  Quit/reopen Safari and test. You can also try try Safari/Clear History and Web Site Data. The down side is it clears all cookies.Doing this may cause some sites to no longer recognize your computer as one that has visited the web site. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library./Caches/com.apple.Safari/Caches.db and move it to the trash.

     

    Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

    Thank you so much!  1st, thanks for your quick and clear reply.  I did everything you said and although it took me a very long time to find the Library folder in Finder, eventually I did. I tested with only a couple of sites and so far it seems like the problem is solved and Safari is running quickly again.  I can't thank you enough - now if only my other tech problems get resolved.
