I will be working from home for a while and have been given an old Lenovo laptop. The display is pretty small. Is there a way to use my fairly new 21.5" iMac as an external display for the laptop?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news however this is not supported. The feature you are referring to is called Target Display Mode, Apple is extremely clear about what systems are supported in Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support.
Not the answer I was hoping for, but at least I know!
