Sounds like you screwed up when you changed the battery.
Now that you opened the iPhone Apple will have nothing to do with it again.
Apple won't fix an iPhone-3. You need to locate a reputable non-affiliated repair shop.

I've seen this happen with a bad battery. The battery you used possibly could be a dud!
