The image size has gone down from 1620 x 1080 to a mere 720 x 480 during upgrades. Is there any chance this can be changed? Thanks

Don't know about the MBP but on my 27" iMac the images are 1080 x 720 with 10.11.4. I don't see any entry in the Photo Booth preference pane rearing image size.
Where are you checking the image size? After dragging the image out of Photo Booth and/or Photos to the desktop?
I Drag the pictures out of photo booth and put into a folder. Not changing the size or editing pic in anyway, that I know of. these are the same steps I have been using for years but after updates, image size has decreased.
And on my MBA the same - PB photos are 1080x720
