How can I transfer a folder of images from a MBAir to an iPad without using the cloud?
Can I do it directly, as if the iPad were an external drive? If Apple won't allow it, is there an app?
I don't want to use the cloud.

Without knowing specifics it's tough to say. If these are photographs, the use iTunes to sync the iPad with the iMac. Apple explains this in Sync photos from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes - Apple Support

Can I do it directly, as if the iPad were an external drive? No, you do not have access to the iPad's file system.
If Apple won't allow it, is there an app? There are some apps, but they are not necessary to sync photos without using iCloud.
I don't want to use the cloud. No problem.
