Perhaps this might help, I was having an unrelated issue with Preview (not opening PDF's) for which I found a cure. I downloaded "Preview Reset" from Ohanaware Software. Preview works perfectly now. I think this automates the process you generally outline, but importantly it trashes the existing broken Preview, then rebuilds Preview and its dependencies. Genius.

Had the same problem. Are you running CamTwist? Or any kind of software webcam that might replace your iSight? Solved by temporarily removing the CamTwist plug-in from the CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL folder in your root Library. Just copy it to the Desktop (you can't move it), delete the one that remains (admin password will be required) and open Preview and try again. It worked fine for me, no crashes at all this time. Then, when you're done, just put the plug-in back (again, admin password required).
