Hold down the power button until the screen goes black.

Wait at least ten seconds then press the power button once to turn it back on.

If you still have problems, boot in Safe Mode.A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that may help.

Top left corner of your screen click the  Apple   > Shut Down.

After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

Once you are in Safe Mode, go back to the Apple  menu. From the drop down menu click:  Restart

Thanks but that didn't work. iMac is brand new and OS X not set up yet. Can't get in to safe mode. My Apple ID and password are correct, same as I use on my iPhone  But it just circles and circles forever When I enter them

Is this a brand new iMac?

If so, you can either return it within 14 days or call Apple/visit a Genius Bar for technical assistance. You have a warranty and 90 days of free telephone support - why not take advantage of it.

I have had the exact same problem as you since yesterday, iMac straight out the box and could not sign into my apple id on set up. I managed to get onto support but best we could do eventually was to skip that step so I could just get in. I have had problems all last night and today with the spinning wheel for all apps that needed to be signed in (App store, iCloud, iTunes, etc). I could also log in on other devices no problem. The only advice I had was to keep trying as there are problems on the server. However, something did seem to be happening in the background as eventually I logged into iCloud and App Store. It managed an update for El Capitan, which has now resolved my login problems for some of the apps. However now Bluetooth has disappeared, and my wireless keyboard and trackpad have to be plugged in..... Basically skip using your ID on setup to get into the computer then you have to plug away at signing in once you are in.
