Q: These new-fangled awards

How, exactly, are these supposed to work?  I read the tutorial for them several times, and yet when I uploaded a third avatar (as I'd only uploaded two), the badge for that particular achievement has yet to be colored in.

Also, I thought access to The Lounge was for Level 5 users and up — now it's Level 6?

I don't get the term "double scroll"

    - and are we talking about Mandy's announcement?

Without or with Stylish CSS invoked the whole thing will fit in the visible part of my Firefox browser window

As you may have guessed, I have been reporting posts for a couple of years at least

I have concluded that this new badging stuff is some sort of Hybrid of "interests" and "achievements" - makes no sense to me at all as an addition to the existing Status Levels as it does not indicate "expertise" or "experience"

Yes, I've assumed rccharles meant that he had to scroll both horizontally and vertically, but perhaps not.

    One way to read things:

    Mostly grey dots = interest

    Mostly blue dots = expertise

    Well 'splained, Lucy!

    I'm a numbers kinda guy, I guess

PLUS, I'm using the NOBadges style now so I'm not payin attention!

I guess the next time I check my points will be when I get a Level up email congratulating me!

I'd rather have "pints" than "points" anywho

    Not in my humble opinion.

If you actually had expertise, you wouldn't need to ask questions, bookmark a discussion, or do several other completely superfluous tasks in that particular forum. Those tasks certainly do not presuppose much of a requirement for anything. If that is the new way of assessing someone's capabilities and knowledge, I shall certainly and proudly remain at the idiot level. And, if that is how it is being "sold" or "advertised" to any new member, then my contributions become worthless since no one in their right mind would accept advice from someone lacking expertise (I certainly wouldn't). May be time to find another volunteer opportunity.

I agree,  I've answered lots of questions recently, a couple Apple Recommended, but am held back by the fact I have not posted a question so I look like a complete newb.  I'm not going to ask a stupid question or something that has already been answered in the past so I'm stuck.  To me the only way around it is to post a user tip in the form of a question. I've just got to wait until something inspires me so I'm not repeating one of my old posts.

Somebody has to think you've been helpful to get to level 3, a solution is required for level 4, you have to gain reporting rights and use them to get to level 7 and 4,000 points before you can write a user tip which is a prerequisite for level 9. Were it my game I'd skew the curve more in favour of helpful activity rather than tasks that could potentially get a new user to level 8 in a few days (particularly if they have the assistance of some sock puppets) but I didn't set it up. I still think that those who mainly come to ask questions are not going to suddenly look like experts if you read the dots as I've suggested. Those who come to help may get some encouragement to continue whereas perhaps they would have previously been daunted by the old guard with their big piles of points. Who knows? The die have been cast and the game has begun. Maybe it will work the way that those who set it in motion want, maybe it won't. In the meantime there is nothing to stop us from doing what we did before, finding people to help and trying our best to do so.

    I gottit!

Badge with no bars = " I'm most interested in this particular subject matter. "

Badge with a buncha bars = " I'm most interested in this subject and I'm darn good at it. "

Little dots in a neat pattern with a larger number of 'em and bigger number beside Level means " I've been doing this a lot longer than the Specialty badge dealio has been around and I've answered a buncha question and been generally helpful. "

TWO systems with some of the same accomplishments required

But, like a i said before, I'm turning StinkinBadges OFF (thanks to you and Hiroto)

    Not necessarily so.

The tasks increase from level to level and asking a question, bookmarking 2x, insert an image into a discussion, and waiting for someone to give you points, appear more important than answering questions. Nor does that make you helpful.

I will continue to do what I have been doing until I no longer want to do it or I get the impression that people don't believe my contributions are helping because I'm not an "expert" with lots of dashes or specialties.

As I said before: I do not feel the need to compete, especially at a kindergarten level and badges or dashes are meaningless. I don't like gamification - if I did, I'd have a social media account. I don't believe good and expert tech support and gamification are a good mix.

I already said it before, I ain't playin that part of the game - I've already turned off the badges with Hiroto's CSS ...

I am not made better at using this joint's features or helping folk by some Kindergarten gold star on a chart incentive program -

we both just do what we do for grins - we must since we don't have adequate tools that are built into real live JiveSoftware

The double scrolling is something to do with having a small screen and css mods when using firefox.  The mods limit the width of the reply field. Perhaps this is interfering. I know I messed with the width of certain fields.  I'm not good a picking out what field to change.  Fields are nested.

I do not see the problem in safari with no mods.

The above two scroll bars are from the image!

PS.  I am surprised I generated all this excitement.  It was posed mostly as a joke.  I didn't think it could be answered. I forgot all about the fact that I run with a modified css.

What's your ZOOM factor? FIVE or SIX? That's how many Command > " + " I have to do to get something that resembles your screenshot!

    Hello rccharles,

I'd guess you missed overriding #globalfooter and #globaldisclaimer elements which originally define the  width to fixed value as 980px.

Try adding the following rule to let them use relative width.

        #globalfooter, #globaldisclaimer { width: 80% !important; }

    Regards,

    H

Addendum. If you have not yet hidden the global navigation at the top, you'd need to add the following rule to hide it, for it defines fixed width. (Of course you might use relative width without hiding it if you wish)

        #global-nav-wrapper {display: none !important; }
