Location Services

File path: Settings > General > Restrictions > Location Services is on (for some things), but I cannot change it - it is showing the green button, but greyed out. (iPad Air with 9.3, which is soon to be replaced with the new iPad Pro 9.7!!!)

I know I have a lot of restrictions/privacy settings on and I had asked this previously, but failed to write down the answer (from sjf or Demo at the time), so I will ask again: what do I need to do to be able to make changes there?

I am determined to learn this thing (iOS) once and for all!

It won't help to clarify things, but all four of my devices (iPhone 5 with no cellular service assigned, iPhone 6, iPad Air2 and iPad Pro) behave the same as yours with those settings tabs graded out. I can add that while turning off find my iPad in the Air2 and iPhone 5 does make those active, doing that on iPhone 6 and iPad Pro does not 😕 (when I posted before I'd only checked that on the iPad Air2 but have now tried it on the other three and only the iPhone 5 responds like the Air2).

All my devices are running iOS 9.3 but those settings have always been grayed out on my devices as far as I can recall. I do have many things locked down in restrictions (especially on the iPhone 6 and iPad Pro as those are my daily use devices for home and work) and the sole location service I leave active is find my device (and diagnostics on the Air2 as it is my current beta program platform, but obviously is running the public release version currently until the next beta seed). So, clear as mud, right 😁

Right! I am looking forward to stumping a Genius or two. I've never used my iPad Air for much more than reading and hooking it up to our TV to watch (free) European TV channels (I'll occasionally peruse ASC, but do not care for the on screen keyboard). As I am also a privacy advocate, I have most everything locked down in Restrictions and choose not to sync or use the Cloud for anything (I do back it up to iTunes on my iMac). However, since I am about to get an iPad Pro (9.7" 128 GB), I've decided that I want to use it for more than that and need to work that thing (iOS) and learn it as best as one can do with a locked down system, so I'm trying to research some stuff before I get the iPad Pro. That is supposed to be delivered next Thursday (we'll see); if it is, we will go to the already set up Genius Bar appointment the next day. I'll probably set mine up right away, but without my modifications until after the appointment because I'd really like to know how/what determines the Restrictions, Privacy, and Locations Services settings - so I can reverse them and/or know exactly how changing an option effects settings elsewhere. I chose not to run the beta because I only have one iDevice and didn't want to come up against a meltdown.

You will love the Pro, it is really nice. I find myself using it a lot more than my Air2 for work related use (with iCloud but also with Office 365 and sharepoint as our company has accounts with MS). And you are very smart to not run the beta on things you need - I only do so on my Air2 after I got the Pro. I've always keput my previous device so I can contribute to the beta program without risking something I truly need every day, like my iPhone 6 which is my only telephone. My OS X beta machine right now is a late 2008 MacBook Pro and not a "primary" machine for me any longer.

I'll be interested in what you learn though. I've grown so used to having those two settings tabs grayed out I never give it much thought until now.

Mine is a mid 2012 MBP which never was my primary machine (which has always been an iMac). I used to run it on a separate partition on the iMac, but that got too annoying with rebooting, so the MBP is perfect - totally separate machine. And, since I don't "need" it for anything, I don't care as long as it doesn't im- or explode, LOL.

I Am glad to hear that you got it resolved and so I have nothing more of any use to add, not that I had anything useful to begin with, but with regard to Michael's statement....

Like Jobs jr. my devices do not exhibit this behavior with Find my iPhone/iPad turned on. Obviously, he and I have something different going on on our devices than you and Michael. Perhaps the information for your trip to the Genius Bar will enlighten us all.

Hopefully I will gain some insight Friday - the Apple Pencil just arrived, but the iPad Pro still says "preparing for shipment". Since that is supposed to be delivered on Thursday, they better get with it as I won't drive to the Genius Bar unless I have the new stuff (it's a 70+ mile round trip) and the appointment is made for Friday AM.

Well, we have been sitting at home all day. My iPad was finally delivered by UPS at 6 pm local time (probably the last package for the day!); his new iPhone SE had a problem as they forgot to put part of the address on the package, so FedEx didn't deliver - he's got that straightened out though as he'll just pick it up at FedEx rather than sitting at home for another day.

In any case, was going to set it up. Got past the WiFi password and was met with "Location Services" with the option to disable. So, since that is exactly what I want to know (the file path or whatever it is called in iOS), I didn't want to proceed any further. Bummer. Turned it off until my appointment tomorrow.

Frustrating day.

Okay, so I had my Genius Bar appointment today (actually, I made two of them as the brand new iPad Pro appeared to have a hardware problem: the lightning port is so tight/small that the supplied cable could barely be inserted and was about impossible to pull out). Anyway, they gave me a new cord which is a bit better.

Now, as for Location Services: the Genius' opinion was that it is best never to turn on Restrictions as it will confuse/mess with the setting you set under General > Privacy (if it differs there). He suggested I do not set Restrictions, enable Location Services, and then disable any I do not want under the Privacy tab. So, that is all I was able to get from him.

So, now I am setting up the new iPad Pro. Interesting: I had a 16 GB iPad Air (12 GB showing as available) and had 9 GB left available (used 7 GB). I restored from there and I now have a 128 GB Pro (only 114 GB showing as available) and only have 108 GB available, so I am using 20 GB for the same stuff?????? The old one needed 4 GB for the system and the new one 14 GB - good thing I got a 128 GB model.

FWIW, the iOS Version is 13E234 on the new one and still 13E233 on the old one. Both show 9.3.1 available: old one: 22 MB and new one: 29 MB for the update.

I understand what you are saying, but I'm not talking about the apps or whatever other content I have - I am referring to the difference between the "official" capacity (on the box) and the actual capacity.

I know the actual is always lower as the "missing" space includes the iOS and whatever needed components, but, in this case, I am specifically referring to the fact/difference that the Air only used 4 GB for the system and the Pro is using 14 GB. The math here tells me that it is using 10 GB more space than the Air. Both are on 9.3.

My original 32GB iPad had about 26 or 27GB capacity out of the box and my 64GB iPad Air 2 has 55GB capacity. So that means the 32GB iPad used about 5GB for the iOS and the reinstalled apps and the 64GB iPad used 9GB. The larger the overall capacity of the device, the ratio to available capacity declines for some reason and I'm not quite sure why that is.
