Q: TV will not show connection to Apple TV.

I have a new AppleTV device which I have connected to my TV via the HDMI cable. I have selected HDMI as the source but none of the options under that have resulted in anything but a blank screen. I think the pairing has to take place before I can set up AppleTV to connect to my WiFi. The power is on for both the TV and AppleTV, the HDMI cable is secure at both the TV and AppleTV ends. I don't know what else I could be missing. Help!

Most HDTV's have more than one HDMI port. Check the TV's output settings to make sure you have the correct HDMI connection selected. That could be why you're seeing the  blank screen.

BTW, pairing refers to Bluetooth which is unrelated to your Wi-Fi settings on your Apple TV menu.

Post the brand and model number of your tv.

The TV is a Philips LCD/Plasma HDTV Model 26PF5321D/37. There is only one HDMI connection. I have selected as the SOURCE, HDMI then OTHER, although I tried most of the other options under HDMI which include DVD, SAT, GAME, DIGITAL STB, PVR, HD, CABLE and OTHER. None get me anything on the TV screen except "Channel Not Available". I've tried changing the channel to 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. and the only thing that shows up in the channel bar is the local station ID for that channel (ex. WFTS). There is nothing connected to the TV except the power cord and the HDMI cable connected to the AppleTV. The AppleTV is on (steady green light) and pressing the menu button does not result in anything appearing on the screen. I am not a big Apple user but do have an iPad and have had an iPhone in the past so I'm not totally ignorant of Apple products. This one has me baffled.

Confirm which model Apple TV you have.  Is your remote silver with arrow keys or black with the touch pad?

Ok first turn on your tv and Apple TV by hitting menu and wait until the white light is steady.

Press and release the AV+ button on the lower left area of the TV remote over and over until HDMI shows as the input on screen.

Next if you get a blank screen try this:

    1. Unplug both ends of your HDMI cable. Then firmly plug them back in.
    2. Turn off your TV. Unplug your Apple TV from power, then plug it back in. Turn your TV back on.
    3. For Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation), hold Menu and Up for five seconds then let go.
    4. After you let go of the buttons, your Apple TV will switch to a new resolution every 20 seconds. This will take a while since there are quite a few to try, but the ATV will try every resolution it can.
    5. You must wait for a resolution that causes the black screen to actually display something.
    6. Use the arrows to select OK then press the center button to set it to that resolution. Select Cancel to quit.

Lets see if this resolves the issue.

Solid green light?  Are you sure it's a new Apple TV?  It should be solid white.

The other thing you mentioned about going through the channels, tells me that something is off. You need to be scrolling through inputs, not channels.   If the television tells you that the channel is not available, you are on the tuner.   Make sure you are changing inputs, you should see HDMI, tuner, a/v, things like that, not channels.

Thank you! Using the remote to get to HDMI input worked like a charm.
