I am having a big problem using my iphone 5.
This error made everything related to signing into my Apple account unusable. This includes the App store, iMessage, FaceTime, and iCloud. Whenever I try to install a new app in the app store, I get the following: "The operation couldn't be completed. (Cocoa error 259.)
Any idea how to fix it?

Might be the iOS is corrupted.
Restore your iPhone to factory settings.
For instructions for iTunes > Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone
Or iCloud > iCloud: Restore or set up your iOS device from iCloud
I understand I have this option, but I have had this issue for a while so have not been syncing my pics, music, etc. with icloud..
So I do not want to lose all of my stuff..

Too bad you didn't ask for help sooner. With any luck iCloud may be backing up your data automatically but with the Cocoa error, there's no guarantee.
what is cocoa exactly? I have been searching for solution for this error message but there's a surprising small number of the same issues asked online..

Having "an issue" is additional reason to create backups, if at all possible, of anything you want to save. You sense there is trouble brewing, so surely you want all the insurance to protect yourself you can possibly have.
Consider this a lesson for the future.
