Hello, my Mid 2014 Book pro is getting quite hot for no obvious reason lately and the battery life is shorten a lot. Is there an app I can monitor and examine the situation and show it to you so you can advice me what the causes might be?
Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), Mid 2014 13' Retina
Download and install a temperature/fan speed application.
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
When your MBP get hot, post images of both for inspection.

I see nothing out of the ordinary in the Activity Monitor display (showing ALL PROCESSES), However, since there are no temperature statistics posted, so I cannot come to any conclusions.

"Elmedia Player" is the most obvious resource-intensive activity. If quitting that app does not resolve the question, attempt to isolate the problem by quitting the other open apps one at a time.
Confirm its exhaust fan is operating properly. Use Apple Diagnostics.
On rare occasions energy consumption will increase for no obvious reason like you describe, and generate the excessive heat that accompanies that condition. The SMC reset will fix that problem, but you already did that. Just be sure you performed the procedure correctly: SMC reset. Follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

Your Mac Pro's power adapter LED might temporarily change states, meaning it might extinguish or momentarily change its color. That is a positive indication that the SMC reset was effective. Not all Mac models will do that though.
But just might change it, not necessarily. I use Macbook Pro 13' Mid 2014 retina.
