Q: El capitan deleted all my photos

My Macbook air had started to act funny with my trackpad getting over sensitive. I got an advise that I should make sure all my IOS-programs was up to date. So I installed all the latest updates including El-capitan. This did not fix my problem and in addition I noticed the next day that all my pictures were gone. The new "picture" program did not show any and I could not open "iPhotos" without downloading an upgrade in Appstore. When I had done this iPhotos started as for the first time, without any photos. To make the situation even worse the hard drive were I had my Time Machine copy of my mac(it was one year old but still hade most of my photos from the last five years) crashed a short while ago and it seems like I will not be abel to get the photos back form this. Is there any way for me to get my photos back? Should I spend money on trying to get it fixed at an applestore or is it a lost cause?

1 - obviously you need to backup up constantly not annually - TM by default does hourly backups automatically unless you stop it somehow

2 - You should never to any update/upgrade unless you have a good backup as things can go wrong

3 - Installind El Captain does not delete anything - it adds software including Photos

3 - If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 it will open your iPhoto library and everything will be there

4 - It would be better to use the new Photos program (which is new and does have a learning curve) - the first time you launch it it should migrate the last used iPhoto library - if it does not drag the desired iPhoto library to the Photos icon in the Dock to migrate it

I also recommend you begin using the new Photos app. If you haven't done so download and run the OS X El Capitan 10.11.4 Combo Update which will also update Photos to 1.5 which include some new features as well as fixes some problems.
