Transferring Message Conversations between iPhones

A family member has an iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.1.6. She wants to upgrade to an iPhone 5, which we intend to buy.

After we get the iPhone 5 and new SIM card, we'll ask the cellular service provider to transfer the service from the old SIM card to the new SIM card.

She has her Contacts backed up to iCloud.

Is there a way that she can back up all of her Message conversations, whether under iMessage or not, and then restore them to the iPhone 5?

I'm not sure if iCloud backup will work if the old iPhone cannot run iOS 8 or later.

Is there a way to do the Messages backup with iTunes on her PC?

Icloud was introduce with IOS 5.0.
