Q: iOS 9.3 - Safari/Mail freezes after clicking links on iPhone 6S

Hi,

Never had any problems with my iPhone 6S. Just upgraded to iOS 9.3 without any issues. After the upgrade, I can't click links when searching something on Google in Safari or clicking a link in the Mail, the apps just freeze.

I tried clearing Safari history data/cache, closing all apps and restarting the phone (both regular and holding both home/power key), disabling all sorts of settings form Safari settings, but no luck.. Anyone with an idea how to sort it out?

Saw this. Its in the news.  This is pretty bad, Apple should respond to this thread with an update. Some pretty important functionality is completely blocked.

I have exactly the same problem with my iphone 6 after updating to 9.3. This is very frustrating as I use my phone a lot to process various things over the internet amd hence the last 2-3 days have made me totally PC dependent... The JavaScript disabled helps however not completly, as some links are still unresponsive for me. Really a big mess as I was travelling and was relying on my phone for a lot of administrative tasks...

PS: having to post this using Chrome, tells it all...

This exactly what I told apple senior support lady, workaround, get with it Apple, now I have found out that the best software writers have left Apple it's not surprising this buggy ios9 was released on customers. Do they not understand what happened to the mighty Microsoft when they released crap software.

The mighty never seem to understand customers can go away just has easy,

I started noticing these freeze problems when clicking on links in email yesterday after I had updated my iPhone to iOS 9.3 the day before, so thought the problem must be with that update. Then today I realized that I was also having this problem with my iPad Air, which isn't eligible for that upgrade, so the problem isn't simply an 9.3 issue. Apple, I hope you figure this out and fix it quickly.  iPad Air 32GB iOS 9.2.1, iPhone 6 64GB, iOS 9.3.

I have upgraded my iPad Pro and iPhone 6 to the new iOS 9.3.  I am having all sorts of issues with things getting hung up.  I am on an email and there is a link.  The link looks active so when I click on it, the screen locks.  I have the same issue on my iPad Pro.

Frustrating.  Hope Apple fixes this ASAP.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus 64 GB and last night, all of a sudden I was unable to click on any link from my email or on Safari and my phone froze.  Interestingly, this happened to me before I even updated my phone to the new IOS 9.3.  I had tried rebooting the phone and other methods found in this post.  I did try the Java Script suggestion, which works for Safari, but I am still unable to click on links via email.

I then figured I would update to IOS 9.3, thinking it would fix the bug - it did not.  So, for the Apple folks, this was a bug that started on the previous update and seems to continue on thru 9.3.  Strangely, it all started for me yesterday before I even updated to 9.3.  Not sure what's up, but it certainly hinders my ability to get work done on my phone.  I would appreciate the Apple folks look into this and figure something out soon.  If not, I may have to find another phone, because I have to be able to conduct business with this phone.  Thanks.

The same problem on my iPhone 6 (16 Gb) and on my wife's iPhone 6s (64Gb)... Safari crashes, Chrome works only opening the link on new windows, the same thing happens with Facebook and Twitter links. Dear Apple, how do you test your ios updates before their release?!?

Of course, the best easy fix whilst Apple are trying to sort this shambles out would be to simply allow people to roll-back to 9.2.1 but that's far too difficult for Apple to do.  If anyone can provide the reason why I'd be most appreciative.  Just the basics please, spare me any techy mumbo-jumbo as I'm really not interested.  Thanks.

I was able to get Safari working again, at least for now, by installing Opera Mini.  I was trying to connect to my work Wifi and the process includes clicking on a button/link in the Wifi login page.  When i did it before I installed Opera the screen would switch and then freeze.  I had the same problem using Chrome and Firefox.  So I thought what the heck let's give Opera a go and it worked in Opera and when I opened Safari I am now able to click on links and have them work.

I still have the problem with links in email and notepad. Haven't had a chance to check Messages yet but I am guessing that they won't work there either. I will probably just stick with Opera until they release the patched firmware.

Guys, I believe I found a workaround to fix this situation, at least it worked on my 6s.

It is based of the workaround suggested here by Rosyna Keller

From the Xcode -> Devices I choose my iPhone connected vis USB to my Mac and I enabled the Console.

From the Console logs is pretty much evident the crash loop interesting the daemon

    com.apple.swcd (shared web content)

it crashes every 10 seconds because the "launchd" process tries to run it again and again.... It crashes due to out of memory issue because is visible a crash report from the JetSamEvent.

The speculation is the daemon crashes because the Database is using is too big due to the fact the Booking.com application uploaded too much data.

The problem is still visible if you uninstall the Booking.com application, because in this situation IOS automatically should remove the data added by the Booking.com app on the SWCD database, but unfortunately it doesn't because the SWCD daemon is in a crash loop!

The trick is to remove the application before the SWCD daemon starts the crash loop.

To achieve the goal I followed these steps:

    1) Connect your device via USB to your PC/MAC

    2) Turn on AIRPLAN mode

    3) Uninstall the Booking.com application

    4) Go to "Settings->Safari

    5) Set "Search Engine" to Bing

    6) Disable "Search Engine Suggestions"

    7) Disable "Safari Suggestions"

    8) Disable "Quick Website Search"

    9) Disable "Block pop-ups"

    10) Disable any "Content Blockers" enabled (Example AdBlock plus)

    11) Disable "Fraudulent Website Warning"

    12) Go in "Advanced" and disable "Javascript"

    13) Stil in airplane mode, reboot your device.

    14) Keep the airplane mode. Re-Install from I-Tunes the "Booking application"

    15) Keep the airplane mode. Run the Booking application.

    16) After you didn't allow the Booking application to send you notification and to use the GPS, kill the Booking application using the IOS task manager (double click on the home button and swipe away the app).

    17) Uninstall the Booking.com application

    18) Exit from the AIRPLAN mode

    19) Now the problem should be fixed and you can re-enable javascript and the other settings in Safari

    Hope this will help :-)

    Cheers

    Raffa
