A new build for the iPad 2 is now available that does not require the Activation step. A fix for the other devices is not yet available. I doubt it is your firewall but you could disable it temporarily and test.

In general, does an IPhone or iPad require any ports other than port 80?

I do wonder however, what on the iPhoen/ipad is trying to get out on high ports like range 49460 - 49472. or even 60k. An app?
