File sharing not working

I have File Sharing turned on for my iMac, though I can not seem to access it from a Macbook. I choose Go > Computer and select the iMac under the Shared section on the left side. When I click on it it says connecting, and than displays a message of Not Connecting. I than press the Connect As button and it does not allow me to log in as a Guest, Registered User or Using an Apple ID. The option for using an Apple ID is the same AppleID on the iMac and on the Macbook. What do I need to do to get this working?

Thanks

heres the way I skin this cat or folder, because skinning a cat is a terrible idea for a number of reasons.

say you have an account/pass on your macbook that is "fred/fredspassword" it's on the network as 192.168.1.101

your account on the iMac is "joe/joespassword", it's on the network as 192.168.1.108

the address doesn't matter, these are random examples, but both computers should be on the same network and subnet

for this example you want to connect to freds user folder

on the macbook go to >system preferences...>sharing

and select file sharing

drag freds user folder into the list of shard folders (or navigate to it after pressing "+" under Shared Folders:)

fred should have read/write on this list, it's freds folder

you can add a different account but lets make it simple to see if there is another problem before we do that.

now go to the iMac, which is Joe's computer

go to Go>Connect to Server (or +k)

under sever address type

afp://192.168.1.101

for user type

fred

for password type

fredspassword
