How do you type an em-dash or en-dash on Smart Keyboard?

I recently got an iPad Smart Keyboard. I'm editing a book using Google Docs on the iPad Pro (12.9") with the Smart Keyboard.

On my MacBook Pro, I can just type option-hyphen for a en-dash, and shift-option-hyphen for an em-dash, but it doesn't seem to work on the Smart Keyboard. How do I type these characters on the Smart Keyboard?

iPad Pro 12.9-inch Wi-Fi, Cellular, iOS 9.3, Using AT&T

It should work the same as on your MacBook Pro, providing that you have US selected in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Hardware Keyboards for the language you are typing in.

What do you get instead of the characters you want?

I setup a shortcut under Keyboard in preferences so that whenever I type two hyphens, it is replaced with a dash.
