We don't know why your friend had problems. You have not provided adequate information to answer the question. If you don't wish to have problems, then I suggest reading this User Tip: Basic Steps for Upgrading OS X.
You are of course aware that El Capitan will not run at all on an iPad which is the only hardware mentioned in your post.

Judging an update by what just one person experienced is like judging the health of a city by what you see when you visit the Emergency Room of one of it's hospitals.
There are millions of users who have updated successfully so a few bad experiences shouldn't put you off. However, that being said, never do an update or upgrade without have a current backup of your hard drive. Remember Murphy's Law.
Assuming you do have a Mac, remember that the forums are where people come to solve problems so you'll find lots of them here. Also remember that people tend to broadcast their problems, not their successes. El Capitan is pretty darn stable now and if you've been running Yosemite or Mavericks with complaints El Cap should be fine for you. As always, for safety sake, back up before you upgrade.
