Q: Home Button Won't wake up Phone, and Touch ID doesnt work.....

So I purchased a used iPhone 6 plus from an individual.  I was assured that the phone was in perfect working condition.  After inspecting the phone in person, it was exactly as described.  Wasn't iCloud locked or anything.

I finally got around to getting it up and running last night and putting my backup of my 5s on it.  I noticed when I first was setting up the 6 plus from scratch that it failed the touch ID portion of setup.  I didn't think much of it since my touch ID hadn't worked on my 5s for so long.

So...... After getting my update on the 6 plus I noticed that when the phone was "asleep" that if you hit the home button nothing would happen.  You can hit it as many times as you like and absolutely nothing will happen.  So I then hit the power/sleep button on the side and it wakes up.  I put in my 4 digit passcode and the phone unlocks and everything seems to work normally.  Put it to sleep, and immediately try the home button to wake it up and it wakes up.  You can go back and forth with it as many times as you want like that and it will work.  Let the phone sit asleep for longer than 5 seconds and the home button once again becomes unresponsive to waking the phone.

I had also tried after getting the phone restored from my backup, trying to set up touch id.  When you go into it and try sliding it on, it immediately goes to a failed screen.  Please go back and try again.

So frustrating!!!!!  I tried doing a reboot by holding the power and home button down until it reboots, and that didn't help anything.

Can someone please please please point me in the right direction of this.  Very frustrated!!

Thanks,

Kyle

To make sure that this is not software related, set it back to factory settings, without using a backup afterwards.

If the Touch ID is working, restore from the backup.

Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support

In case it does not work, contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider to get it checked.

Has the screen or home button been replaced by the previous owner?

I do not know if anything has been replaced or not.  I took it by a local repair shop and they looked at it.  The guy said that the screen looked original, as did the home button.  He did say that the cable that goes from the home button to the the board had a small kink in it.  He replaced it with a new cable, and that did not fix the problem.

Sorry, but if that local repair shop has not been an Apple Authorized Service Provider, Apple will not fix that, due to the device getting serviced by a 3rd party.

In that case, another 3rd party repair shop is your only hope to get the home button working again correctly

Touch ID problems can only be fixed by Apple, only they can pair the hardware parts again, if they had to replace the home button or the screen.

Anyone else have any ideas? The local phone medic said he could put a new home button in it for $90.00. He said there is a risk of it bricking the phone. Has anyone heard of this happening? I'm very hesitant of them doing it if there is a chance that can happen. I'm still tempted to take it to apple and see if the Genius Bar people will look at/work on it.

Ingo2711has given you the safest and proper options which will provide you with some peace of mind as to the nature of the repair you are getting - you have indicated that the repair person mentioned a chance of bricking the phone - will they cover the loss if they do? I guess you have some decisions to make
