Q: what do i do if even in safe mode it does not completely start up?

My 5 yr old 27 in imac does not reach the startup screen- it gets 95% the way and just sits there. It had run perfectly since the last start up earlier in the week, and had an application hang (Turbotax), so I close that app, and attempted to restart the computer.

MacBook Air, latest mac os is installed

Try starting in Safe Mode

Restart the Macintosh. Press and hold the Shift key immediately after you hear the startup tone. Release the Shift key when the Apple logo appears. Safe Boot appears on the Mac OS X startup screen.

hi i did that. it has take about 15 min to fill the progress bar but it has not gotten past that/

The progress bar took ~15 min to full end to end under the apple logo. It not opening the desktop. What might I try next?
