Q: I have two screens how do I switch from one to the other?

I have a Mac Book Pro and I want to watch a movie on a second screen which is attached by a HDMI cable.  How can I switch the picture from my laptop to the second screen?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

When you connect the HDMI display, ensure that the 'Mirror Displays' setting is turned off in System Preferences > Displays.

The Arrangement pane will show you how the two displays are set, which you can drag around to change if you require.

Then all you need to do is drag the application window of the movie to the second display.
