You need to get iTunes to recognize the iPod, so that it appears in iTunes.  If the computer's iTunes library was previously used to sync this iPod, the screen lock will not be on when you disconnect it.  Or, you can do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes, to erase the iPod and set it to default settings.

What currently happens when you connect the iPod?  Is the iTunes library on the computer the same one that was previously used to sync the iPod?  To rule out a faulty USB docking cable, try a different cable (if possible).

It does not need to be the iTunes library "first used" with the iPod (just the one most recently used to sync the iPod).  If the iPod's screen says "Connected," that means there is a data connection between iPod and computer.

You can try putting the iPod into Disk Mode

Run iTunes and connect the iPod.  If iTunes picks it up, it may prompt you to do a Restore with the message about "recovery."  If you're OK with erasing the iPod, proceed with the Restore.  This also sets the iPod to default settings, so the screen lock feature is no longer enabled.

If that does not help, do you use a Mac or Windows PC?

iTunes syncing is typically in one direction only, from the iTunes library on computer to the iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer, except for songs purchased from the iTunes song (which you can also re-download from the iTunes Store at no cost).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer music," you should get some useful links.

Once the iPod's song files are on your Mac's drive, add them to your current iTunes library.  After confirming all of your songs are now in your iTunes library, you can set up syncing with the iPod (or do a Restore in it).
