recovery mode

Trying to enter Recovery mode, but my iMac doesn't "see" keyboard during start up and "finds" it only when the OS is loaded. Any advice? Is there any way to enter Recovery after start up? or maybe there's a way to fix the problem with the keybord? Thanks.
