Q: stuck with an icloud account that doesn’t work

hi,

some time ago i changed the email address associated with my apple ID from ‘info@myname.com’ to ‘myname@gmail.com’, which means that my apple ID changed too. the icloud account on my old iphone was still referred to by the old ID, but it somehow worked.

i set up my new iphone with an itunes backup of my old phone which transferred my icloud account to my new phone and now on the new phone the icloud account doesn’t work.

and here’s the problem: i can’t delete the account either because it asks for the password associated with the old apple ID to do so. and the old apple ID doesn’t exist anymore so. so now im stuck with a brandnew iphone with an icloud account that doesn’t work and that can’t be deleted either.

how can i solve this?

    Passwords aren't stored in backups.

You connect to Apple's servers in real time when you enter a password, so the old ID should still work with your current password if it did before.

    I would call Apple Support.

Your situation sounds more like an activation lock. If you don't recognize the Apple ID, it must belong to the previous owner. You need them to delete it from their iCloud account.

Turn off Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support

LACAllen, have you really read my post?

i’m locked into a no longer existing icloud account, or to be more precise: a re-ID’ed icloud account (not by me, but by apple), that i can’t get out of.

i’ve tried to j***b**** the phone. i don’t like to do that because - paradoxically - i do like apple’s stringent safety measures, but i saw no other means as apple doesn’t seem to care.

to no avail. i couldn’t turn off ‘find my iphone’ because it gets me into the same non existing icloud account crap again. please apple, get your act together and do one or two of the following.

    • make your phones check whether an icloud account exists or not, and if not let me delete it from my phone.

    • don’t make the apple-ID identical to the associated email address. email addresses can (and will) change. ID’s shouldn’t.

thanks, hope someone at apple is listening.

Lacallen, there is no previous owner, the iPhone is brandnew. No mischief here. Just a non-existing icloud account that wrecks.

That depends. If you are not the original owner and don't have the original bill of sale, then no, Apple will not help you with activation lock.

Your phone will continue to work until you need to activate it agin. Then you will be stuck with a useless phone.

The previous owner should have done this for you before giving you the phone.

Your Apple ID has not changed... it's alias has. The system should recognize both email addresses as being connected to your Apple ID.

If you call Apple Support, they will see the change you made to your email address/alias and assist you.

Ok... if you can provide that paperwork to Apple, they can help you with the activation lock. Call support and tell them what has happened, stressing that you are the original owner and have the proof of purchase. I believe they even take the paperwork from you by email, or you can make an appointment at a store.
