Every time I open mail or icloud my macbook asks for my apple id password. As soon as it is entered it asks for it again. No problems with ipad or iphone. Any idea how yo stop this?

In the iCloud pane of System Preferences, please uncheck the box marked Mail and check it again.
This is almost impossible to do as after logging in the dialogue box reappears in less than 2 seconds . The functionality of iCloud is OK. This just keeps on happening. When I try to log in he options go bold for a few seconds and then revert to the faded state. I cannot enter the cloud preferences for long enough to do anything.
Please back up all data before proceeding.

Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.

Thank you for the time you have spent on this. I have tried all you suggested but nothing's changed. I moved the folder to trash as told. That had no effect so I put it back in the
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iCloudHelper
Did this start happening when you set up two-factor authentication? What is the exact, complete text of the password prompts?
You are right this happened after I started two stage authentication for iCloud. The exact text in dialogue box is
This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with ".........my apple id....."

I think you may have enabled two-step verification. Please take the steps in the article linked below. I contacted Apple Support. As you suggested my iCloud keychain had to be renewed. It seems the problem started when I opted for two stage authentication for iCloud. Keychain reset and all OK now.
