Q: I can't see iPad on finder

I know use iTunes but thats rubbish -it doesn't work either.

All I want to do is drag some photos that I took on my digital camera and save onto photos in my smart folders so I can view on iPad.  Should be a simple drag and drop on finder but no.  iTunes doesn't support photos so thats no use so I'm stuck with what should be a simple job.  Why do apple specialise in making the simple complicated?

Photos can only be synced using iTunes to an iPad but alternatively you can download photos from your iPad to your Mac using Image Capture > Image Capture: Transfer images and other items from your device

The Image Capture app is located in your Applications folder.

Dragging photos to the Finder from an iPad is not supported.

    Thanks but....

    It should be supported!

I want to go from computer to iPad not iPad to Computer.  Photos can't be synced to iPad on iTunes  well not on my set up anyway - there is no photos option on iTunes just music, movies, TV shows, books, audiobooks, tones, purchased and thats it.

Connect your iPad to your Mac, open iTunes, and you will see a Photos tab. The photos are not in iTunes, iTunes just allows you to sync photos in your Mac to the iPad.

you talk vertical tabs, people talk horizontal tabs, those show up when one connect the iPad and navigate to it in iTunes on the computer

Yep tried all that stuff before posting but when I chose sync option it doesn't actually do anything and the photos are not actually on my iPad.

Maybe I should get the iPad to take photos of the image on my screen - it would be quicker!

Don't click sync yet. Again, connect the iPad to your Mac, Open iTunes, on the upper left there will be a little iPad icon, click it, then you will see various tabs arranged vertically on the left side. One of those should say Photos, click it and then you will have to select the folder in your mac that you want to sync from. After you have selected the proper folder then you sync.

Ok I've done it (with your help).

I'm not sure how it happened but the photos are on my iPad - many more than I selected btw but hey ho.  I had to accept to have the photos deleted from my computer to do the sync which is misleading as thankfully it doesn't seem to delete them but you have to accept that condition to make the sync do anything.

Still no photos listed under the device in iTunes but they are actually on the device (iPad) - messy

Its horrible but it worked (eventually) which brings me back to why not a simple drag and drop in Finder - iTunes is for music well actually Clemintine is but thats another discussion.

    Many thanks

It would be simple if the iOS file system was an open book, but it is not.

So, I would suggest either Dropbox or iCloud as the dead simplest way to do what you want. It will end up a drag and drop for you.

You get a 2GB Dropbox free and a 5GB iCloud account free.

    You are welcome....

You said "I had to accept to have the photos deleted from my computer to do the sync which is misleading as thankfully it doesn't seem to delete".

That question is about deleting them from your iPad, not the computer, i.e., when you click on Sync you will delete all photos previously synced, only the new sync will remain. This article may help.

Many thanks again to you all.

    Will look into dropbox option.

The cloud limit has been a pain for me in the past as has the iTunes song limit.  There is no perfect answer but better than windows still I guess.

    Thanks for all the support
