Q: Unusually slow MacBook pro, aswell as issues with powering up.

I'm looking for some help on fixing my Mac, any help from anyone would be great!

Recently my MacBook Pro Late 2013 model (running El Capitan) started running really slow out of the blue (before this it was perfect). No hardware or software changes, just really randomly started going slow. My mac has always very well maintained a, usual clean ups of junk, disk check utility performed often, no unnecessary apps or data.

Other issues I'm having with power up the mac from turned off is when I press the power button to turn it on it starts up then just turns off (doesn't even get to the apple loading screen, screen lights up but then powers off), I have to hold the power button for about 10 seconds to get it to power on properly, when I close the lid without powering off then open it I'm presented with the login screen instantly but then the Mac Book shut downs completely.

I've ran the Apple Diagnostic, no problems. I also ran the disk utility repair, no change. I've even done a clean install of the OS and there has been a very minor change but still performing nowhere near the level it was at.

Thanks,

MacBook Pro with Retina display

A slow Mac can be due to not enough available storage space.

Click your Apple  menu top left in your screen.

From the drop down menu click About This Mac then select the Storage tab.

Your Mac needs are bare minimum 8GB's of available storage just for the operating system let alone all your personal data.

That rules out storage space ...

First, Reset NVRAM on your Mac

If that doesn't help, Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

Just done both of them fixes and no change. Still slow, still powers down after login screen on closing the lid and still requires me to hold the power button for 10 seconds to turn on.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

    Hi Carolyn the message i got was;

    The battery requires service.

It is not functioning normally, though you may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. You can continue to use your battery before its checked, without harming your computer.
