Sign into https://www.icloud.com/ if Find My iPhone was active on the device it should be listed here. If it isn't then it is too late to do anything about it now. Call your carrier and have them block the SIM. When mine was stolen over £200 worth of calls were made on it overnight.

Indeed. I was insured, but I still had to pay the carrier first and then claim back the cost of the calls from the insurer.

I remember cell phones used to be packaged with a little lanyard - like anyone ever used it!

I'm like you, I would not lock my phone = too much trouble > until it gets swiped!

Make use of that lanyard attachment for tying it around my neck like a convention badge!
