Anyone have any suggestions on how to get this to work? The weird thing is that handoff works between my iPhone 5S and iPad mini 3, and it works between my iPad mini 3 and my macbook air, but not between my iPhone 5S and macbook air..

Hi! I had the same problem. I fixed this by turning off Handoff on iPhone and MacBook and then turning on Handoff back on iPhone and MacBook.
"If you want to turn off Handoff on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps. Then turn off Handoff.
On your Mac, go to System Preferences > General. Then uncheck the Allow Handoff setting."

Signed out of iCloud on each device (iPhone, iPad and Macbook) then shut them all down
Cleared PRAM on the MacBook (hold down Option Command P and R at start up until the second startup chime)
Delete /Library/Preferences/com.apple.bluetooth.prefs
Restart iPhone and Ipad.
Sign back into iCloud on all devices.
