Q: Exercise ring has gone haywire

for two weeks now the Exercise ring on my apple watch has been very erratic, counting exercise that I simply haven't done...

I've noticed also that the Move ring has stopped registering calories like it used to??

I've thought about resetting, but don't want to lose any data from my activity...

Any ideas??

    Hi

To credit progress towards your daily Exercise goal, the Activity app aims to identify activity that equals or exceeds the intensity of "a brisk walk". The definition of a brisk walk varies from person to person and depends upon your personal information.

Estimations of calories (credited towards your Move goal) also depend on your personal information.

To check that your personal information is accurate - and to update it over time:

    - On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch tab > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

During general daily wear, the Activity app relies on your arm motion (measured by the accelerometer) to track movement for the purpose of crediting progress towards daily goals. For the best results, allow the arm on which you are wearing your watch to swing naturally as you move around.

Calibrating your watch also helps to improve the accuracy of various estimations (including Exercise credit and calories) made by the Activity app and Workout app. More information and instructions for calibrating your watch are available via the link below.

If your pattern of activity has not changed significantly, it may otherwise help to restart both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both devices off together, then restart your iPhone first:

    - To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off;

    - To turn it on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.

If you have not yet done so, it may also help to update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software:

    - Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

    - Update the software on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

If the issues persists, next try unpairing and re-pairing your watch:

    - The Watch app on your iPhone takes watch backups automatically, including a fresh one when unpairing via the app. Choose to restore your watch (Restore from Backup) when offered the option during set up. Most data and settings will be restored, with some exceptions (eg Apple Pay cards, passcode).

    - Unpair your Apple Watch and iPhone - Apple Support

    - Set up your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Thanks for the help Jonathan UK, seems that the calibrate section had altered with my height & weight drastically, not sure how that happened??

Just to let you know I started by setting the height/ weight, then installing the latest update on my phone & watch, then double checked the height/ weight had remained the same, which they had, all seems to be working correctly again.....

You may have granted permission for one or more other apps (for example, a third-party fitness app) to share height and weight information with the Health app. If so, one of these apps may be the source of the inaccurate data.

To check for any such apps and their permissions:

    - On your iPhone, in the Health app (red heart on white background), go to: Sources (tab) > tap on any apps that may be listed > review their permissions to read and/or write Health information.

If this proves to have been the cause, changing the app's settings and/or revoking certain permissions may help to avoid the issue arising again.
