I don't want all of my pictures from my old mac on my new one..

I bought my new macbook yesterday because my old one was SO slow. My theory is that it's the amount of pictures and other stuff, that are taking up the space. The thing is, I don't want my new one to become slow, because of my pictures in ICloud.. I haven't yet dared to sync my computer with my other devices, in fear of that.. Is there anything I can do?

iCloud should not be a problem. Moreover, you can set Photos on your Mac to keep low-resolution photos in order to save up space -> iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support

Respecting to your other data, you can choose what to move to your new Mac if you use Migration Assistant to transfer your data, so you will not have any storage issue -> Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support
