I have just upgraded my iMac to El Capitan. My HP Photosmart 7520 now only scans from Launchpad and in Black/white ? any ideas ?

Go to the App Store and try running another Software Update. If your system does not automatically detect a new HP update..?
Additionally have a look at > Mac Basics: Using a scanner - Apple Support and try using Image Capture instead of HP's Scan-ware.
Been on HP site, lots of people having problems once upgraded to El Capitan. Now downloading a new driver and will try that before going down your suggested route. Presently I can only scan from the Mac not direct from the HP as its no longer recognising my computer, yet my computer recognises the HP wirelessly ... and then its Black and White. Others are having problems saving the documents...I havent got that far yet !! No doubt I may be trying your suggestion before the afternoon is over, Many Thanks.
Failed to download from HP site, but managed via your link, so thanks for that. Loaded the new Driver and switched off Imac and Printer as I had read in other posts, and lo and behold when I switched back on my printer had found my computer and scans are in colour.

Sounds like the HP software and El Capitan are not playing well together.
Besides testing Image Capture, I would carefully check all of the settings on the HD scan window.
(FWIW Image Capture is the only thing that I have ever used for OS X scanning)
