Can't sign out of Apple ID because it isn't an email address - now what?

I have been trying to update my iPad, but it won't let me until it restores an old AppleID account that no longer functions. Somehow I got an ID that isn't an email address back when it was first starting and can't remember that password now. How can I get rid of it and all references to it on my iPad?
