Macbook Pro Mid 2010 is ridiculously slow

Hello,

I'm writing here because I'm having serious problems with the Macbook Pro I use at work. I'm not a Mac OS expert, since I never tried to get a little bit deeper on the system, so I'm really a noob. I have the computer for 2/3 years, in the beginning it was ok but in the last months, it's being impossible to work with without losing my patience. The computer takes a lot of time to boot, it takes literally more than 5 minutes to open apps such as skype or excel, and even when it opens, it responds very slowly. That rainbow ball appears a lot of times, and it's really complicated everytime I need to open a new program (simple stuff such as keynote, safari or firefox). The disk has more than 50% of its total capacity free. I'm running Yosemite at this moment.

From the specs of the computer, I wouldn't expect this behaviour, so I guess there is something going on in there. Unfortunately, I don't have the knowledge to run anykind of diagnostics software to try to figure out what the problem is. So, can you help me with this?

The computer is:

Macbook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

Processor Intel Core i5 2.53 GHz

Memory 4GB (2 slots 2GB DDR3, 1067 MHz)

Graphics Nvidia GeForce GT 330 M, PCIe, 256 MB

HD Hitachi HTS545050B9SA02 500 GB (approx. 320 GB free).

Thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

mcribas,

There are two things your report, immediately, flagged up to me.

  1. Your biggest problem RAM. You would, definitely, benefit from getting more of it. Your Mac can take up to 8 GB. Go to, reputable, vendor like Crucial or Other World Computing (OWC) and you can spec out exactly what you need.
  2. You've, also, got quite a bit of Adware on your system that should be removed. Malwarebytes is a useful tool that you can install to get rid of it.

FYI...I have the same MacBook as you. It works great with El Capitan.

Apr 25, 2016 6:31 AM in response to Cerebro

Sorry for the late reply. And thank you both for the answers.

Yes, the RAM is not great, but unless the new OS requires more RAM than the old ones, I don't think it alone can justify the current performance of the computer. I've updated to El Capitan and it improved a bit, but nothing very significant.

I already download the free version of Malwarebytes and i ran a scan but nothing was found, which is weird. Unless the free version is not good enough.

OGELTHORPE, I tried that but unfortunately, it seems that there is no Recovery Partition in the computer. HDD was formatted before the computer came to me, so probably during that operation, the recovery partition was eliminated, I'm not sure though. Anyway, I'm doing that First Aid in the partition I have.

Apr 25, 2016 8:06 AM in response to mcribas

According to the EtreCheck report you have a Recovery partition

Disk Information: ⓘ

Hitachi HTS545050B9SA02 disk0 : (500.11 GB) (Rotational)

EFI (disk0s1) <not mounted> : 210 MB

Recovery HD (disk0s3) <not mounted> [Recovery]: 650 MB

MFCmbp HD (disk1) / : 498.88 GB (321.71 GB free)

Core Storage: disk0s2 499.25 GB Online

I would not add RAM until you rid yourself of the adware and a lot of third-party software. Adware plus some of the third-party stuff can create RAM starvation that will persist until the software is remove or updated, regardless of what you do with RAM.

You can eliminate your specific Adware issues by simply opening Safari in Safe Mode (hold SHIFT while launcing Safari) then going to Safari Preferences > Extensions tab and and clicking the Uninstall button for each of the four extensions shown as adware in the report.

You also have both AdBlock and AdBlock Plus. They may be conflicting with each other, affecting you browser's speed. Pick on or the other but don't use both.

You have a fair number of User log-in items that get loaded when you start the computer. I would start by turning off launch-at-login for any program that the report shows as "(missing value"):

User Login Items: ⓘ

iTunesHelper Application (/Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunesHelper.app)

BoxSyncHelper UNKNOWN (missing value) <-----------

Dropbox Application (/Applications/Dropbox.app)

TomTomHOMERunner UNKNOWN Hidden (missing value) <-----------

Android File Transfer Agent Application (~/Library/Application Support/Google/Android File Transfer/Android File Transfer Agent.app)

KiesAgent UNKNOWN Hidden (missing value) <-----------

Google Drive Application (/Applications/Google Drive.app)

MEGAsync Application (/Applications/MEGAsync.app)

fuspredownloader Application Hidden (~/Library/Application Support/.FUS/fuspredownloader.app)

You turn them off in System Preferences > Users & Groups > {your username} > Login Items tab.

Again, careful review the applications Etrecheck shows on your computer and rid yourself of anything you no longer use or need.

Not weird at all. EtreCheck is reporting that it is finding those adware extensions in Safari's cache. I've never understood the reason for that, as those extensions are not actually installed at this point. You're just seeing a leftover trace that isn't a threat at all, and should eventually be removed from Safari's cache through the normal process of cycling out old cache files.

Apr 25, 2016 12:14 PM in response to mcribas

Thank you all for your help.

I've been trying to do what you recommended. I already booted into the recovery to do the analysis of the HDD (still. couldn't find Recovery HD), nothing very relevant poped-up.

Also, I removed a few of Safari extensions, and I already disable a few applications from initializing during boot (not only those missing, but others that I found not very relevante). I also cleared Safari cache just in case. It seems it's running a little better, but still very slow. I seriously don't understand if this is simply a RAM problem or if the disk is failing. I didn't really want to upgrade because this computer is not mine, but from work, but if it is really a hardware problem, I have to consider an upgrade.

I attach a new and updated file of EtreCheck.

It seems it's even worse now. I'm not sure if most of this is due to OS X update.

If you have Yosemite or El Capitan installed, you must boot the MBP with COMMAND + R to get in to the recovery partition.

Ciao.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I can't find it. I tried already what you said but the only thing I see in the Recovery mode is MFCmbp HD. From the last EtreCheck report, it says the recovery HD is not mounted. I tried to mount it using the diskutil command in Terminal but nothing happened. I don't really know if this is crucial for this matter, but it appears that the Recovery HD exists, but I can't access it.
