How notifications behave depends on the status of your devices. In order to bring notifications to your attention as soon as possible:
- If your iPhone is unlocked, you will receive notifications on your iPhone instead of on your watch.
- If your iPhone is locked or asleep and your watch is unlocked (regardless of whether the watch screen is asleep or awake) and on your wrist, you will receive notifications on your watch.
- If your watch is locked or has Do Not Disturb enabled, notifications will go to your iPhone.

Mar 27, 2016 7:14 PM in response to Jonathan UKby harperdog,Thank you for your response. But none of your suggestions works. I tried all of those several times. In fact, getting this note from you only came on my watch when my phone woke up. I do not use passcode on my phone so it is never "asleep." Do you have any other ideas! Your expertise is much appreciated!

Mar 27, 2016 10:17 PM in response to HyperNetFellaby harperdog,Thank you I have paired and unpaired five times. Mail alerts only come through the watch when the phone is unlocked. I get zero text alerts. But when I opened the text icon, the texts are there. I'm about to give up and return this thing.

Mar 28, 2016 12:52 AM in response to harperdogby Jonathan UK,You might wish to try using the following settings.
On your iPhone, the Watch app, go to::
- My Watch (tab) > General > Wrist Detection - turn this on.
- My Watch > Passcode > Turn Passcode on (choose either a Simple Passcode or a more complex one).
- Also on the Passcode settings screen, enable Unlock with iPhone.
- My Watch > General > Wake Screen > Wake Screen on Wrist Raise - turn on.
After putting it on your wrist, your watch will then unlock after whatever you do first: either unlocking your watch manually (by entering the passcode) or unlocking your iPhone. It will then remain unlocked (including when the screen is asleep) until you remove it from your wrist. When you remove your watch, it will lock automatically.

Mar 28, 2016 7:04 AM in response to Jonathan UKby harperdog,Thanks again. None of the suggestions works. I don't know how else to say this: I do not receive text alerts. If I open the text icon, the texts are there. But zero notifications. As for mail, those alerts only arrive when the phone is UNLOCKED. According to all the instructions, I'm supposed to get mail when the phone is locked. What's the point of paying upwards of $300 for a watch when all I have to do is access mail and texts on my phone? Apple has been famous for being highly intuitive. Apple Watch is certainly not that.

Mar 28, 2016 9:19 AM in response to harperdogby Jonathan UK,Also check the following settings:
- On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Do Not Disturb:
- Turn off Manual;
- Turn off Scheduled.
- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Do Not Disturb:
- Turn off Mirror iPhone.
- When viewing the time on your watch, swipe up on the display, then swipe left / right to the Settings Glance:
- Check that Do Not Disturb is not turned on (button with the moon icon).
- Check that Silent Mode is not turned on (button with a crossed out bell icon).
- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Sounds & Haptics:
- Check that the Alert Volume is in your preferred position;
- Check that Haptic Strength is set to the middle or far right hand side of the slider;
- You may also wish to enable Prominent Haptic (to receive pre-announcements of common alerts).
- On your iPhone, check that both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled:
- Settings > Bluetooth, Settings > Wi-Fi.
Also check your settings for Messages and Mail:
- On your iPhone, In the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Messages - check your settings.
- For example, you might set this Custom and then, under Alerts, enable each of Show Alerts, Sound and Haptic.
- On your iPhone, In the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Mail - check your settings.
- For example, you might set this to Custom, then under Alerts select Show Alerts.
- Also, tap on your email account to enable each of Sound & Haptic.
It may also help to restart both your iPhone and your watch. Turn both devices off together, then restart your iPhone first:
- To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off;
- To turn it on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
- On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Do Not Disturb:

Mar 28, 2016 9:51 PM in response to Jonathan UKby harperdog,Jonathan, your persistence is appreciated. I now have intermittent success. I'll have to see how it goes over the next few days and then decide whether I will keep it. Again, thanks for your ongoing support.
