Q: Trackpad Freezing

Hello, Apple Community. I recently purchased back in February a 13.3 inch MacBook Pro Retina and it's already giving me a problem. It has recently has started freezing the trackpad and the wired mouse that I have connected. It's done this a couple times already. I don't exactly know what to do about it other than restart my computer, but I feel like this shouldn't be happening it's practically a brand new computer. I think it's software related, but I could be wrong. I updated El Capitan to 10.11.4. That's the only thing that I've done. Anyone else having this issue? Is there a fix? Thanks Guys!

Could you post what build number you OS has?

I installed the 10.11.4 Combo update, but I really don't expect to change anything…

what does it being a month old have to do with cleaning the track pad?

if you pad is intermittently going out your first step is to rule it out. Looks clean does not equal IS clean, ever.

It could be a minute old, you could have hair spray, cologne, or oil from your fingers or someone forgot to wash their hands after they used the bathroom.

Wipe the pad down and clean it, if the problem persists it was not the pad, it took 12 seconds to rule out the trackpad, and since this is a sporadic report not widespread you can't conclusively say it's the OS regardless of when it happened.

I'm running the same -- 10.11.4. I found the 10.11.3 Combo update online. I wonder if I download that and install it will it fix the problem.

I can almost guarantee you this is a software issue, and since you probably aren't having this problem yourself it's easy for you to rule out that it can't be. None of this was happening when I was on 10.11.3. I also wiped off my trackpad like you said earlier today and it still happened.

Now I'm having it freeze in Safari. I did a reinstall of 10.11.4 and was advised to turn my computer off at night by Geek Squad at Best Buy today. I'll keep this thread alive if it's the last thing I do.

UPDATE: It's now happening more frequently! THEY HAVE TO FIX THIS! I'm going to download 10.11.3 and try to revert back to that to see if it fixes the problem. I'll keep everybody posted.

I found that the only fix at this moment is to stop using Safari because that's what was crashing it. I recently had a crash that was unrelated to Safari because I'm using Opera now, but I think it was the fact I've had my computer on for days and just letting it sleep. So I highly recommend turning your computer off at least once every couple days to avoid a crash. Remember to save anything that you've been working on religiously. Lost a project in Adobe Illustrator recently because I didn't save so. It's important to save.

I also have the same problem on my MacBook Pro 13'' Retina display. I have had this notebook for about a year. I had never had this issue until I upgraded to the latest version of OS X. I have tried all sorts of things from cleaning cache memory to restoring the OS X. Nothing has helped so far. In the beginning, it was freezing once a week, but over the past week it has been freezing once every single day. My trackpad becomes as hard as rock. My warranty is expiring very soon, so I am gonna take into an Apple store. It's just weird.

SebSemmi is right, a new one with the same OS likely won't fix it..  I purchased a 13" MAC Book Pro, 256 gig HD, 8 gig RAM, Retina, running 10.11.4 in March of this year. It says that it's an early 2015 model.  After just over a month of dealing with the issue, and generating 8 Capture Data reports, tech support at My Apple contacted the store manager where I bought it and asked him to replace it with a new one.  Prior to doing that, they tried many different things.  Screen sharing never solved anything, wiping the HD and reinstalling OS 10.11.4 did nothing either. So, I replaced it last week and it froze last night.  Apparently Apple has identified an "issue" (the store manager just told me that he read it on a forum, last night) and it likely won't be fixed until they release the next OS update.  I'm taking mine back, and they're going to give me a new one that has 10.11.3 and disable automatic updates until the issue is fixed.  I'd like to know why this seems to affect random laptops, and not the entire batch?  The only other things that I have installed on it are Microsoft Office (new version), Adobe Flash Player and Skype.

One thing that you may have not tried is a restart in the SafeMode (which clears some system caches):

shutdown, start while holding the Shift key, it is slow, login, then restart normal.

Have you tried this action related to this specific issue?
