Q: OS X 10.11.4 freezing and/or crashing while using Safari

Hi everyone!

Have others experienced freezing and sometimes crashing of Mac OS X 10.11.4 while using Safari? Is this a known issue or is it just me?

The way this manifests itself is that scrolling and mouse movements suddenly start to get slow and jerky. Then, within 30 seconds to a minute, the keyboard stops working and mouse clicks no longer have an effect, but the mouse cursor will still move. Then it either stays that way indefinitely or the system crashes. The only recourse is to force a reboot using the power button.

This happens to me every other day, but I cannot reproduce it on demand. I believe (but I'm not certain) that the first such crash has occurred before the recent upgrade to 10.11.4.

This is on a

Mac mini (Late 2012)

Mac OS X 10.11.4

Safari 9.1 (11601.5.17.1)

Cheers

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

I upgraded to El Capitan, and this process has not helped prevent freeze ups, so I gave up following these steps. Also upgrading to 10.11.5 has not help as well.

I feel your pain. I upgrade to El Capitan 10.11.5 hoping that this would address the freeze ups, but no luck. The only thing left is to revert back to Mavericks, or completely erase the hard drive and do a clean reinstall.

    Hi tech$1,

why don't you just download Macs Fan Control http://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control

let your fan spinning and stop complaining?

Problem was solved for me with this. Keep RPM of your fan/fans above 1500 RPM and you will never have the freeze.

Well after a week of 10.11.5 and no freezes I just froze up again.

Looks like 10.11.5 is still buggy with the freeze. Was running Chrome and started a video.     BRRRRRRRR

Hope Apple is seeing these comments. Of I already filed a bug report which Apple replies that it is a duplicate of some number that does not exist.

Thanks tiger-m, first time my MacBookPro is cool and smooth, controlling the fans has been the best simple solution ever.

Hi Toca143, I think the "bug" in OS X is that it is pushing hardware to the limits - especially Safary (trying to do the job as quickly as possible and use all resources available). With good cooling there is less risk to freeze, especially for our compact Macbooks.

Just adding my name as another person with this problem.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)

    2.9 GHz Intel Core i5

    8GBM RAM

    OS X El Capitan v10.11.4

    Safari 9.1

It's happened twice in the last two days, and a couple times before that. I find the trackpad lock-up to be the oddest thing. It becomes "unclickable."  Like, how does it mess with a physical component of my Mac?

The forcetouch on the new trackpad is haptic, that means there is no physical clic and that "clic" is totally a software part (you can't have an haptic feedback when your mac is off). So if mac os craches, the trackpad too. That's not weird

Hi! I'm also having this problem on a 2 week old MacBook Pro Retina, early 2015 running OS X 10.11.4. It first crashed the day after I bought it whilst browsing Facebook and it has happened on six occasions since.

    El Capitan update:

I am presently using three computers all running El Capitan. Two are stable one is not. Two are running CS and CC Adobe, Microsoft, FTP, Outlook, and one is running without these apps.

The iMac is the one that is not running stable. It was upgraded from Yosemite while fully loaded with apps and server access software. I suspect that the upgrade to E Capitan might have corrupted or run into app conflicts, which is causing the operational issues such as freezes.

The laptops are all running El Capitan and so far so good.

Since the conflict could be several things, the solution at this time is to erase the iMac hard drive completely and do a clean install of El Capitan, then reinstall all apps. This includes installing the latest releases compatible with OS X 10.11.5.

Is anyone still having any issues?  I haven't used my MBP 15inch since Memorial Day.  I've been using a MBA 11inch instead.  Needless to say, I would like to return to using my MBP 15inch ASAP.

Any reliable fixes?  I've tried everything mentioned in this post (and was even one of the commenters before).  Has Apple acknowledged this for more than just the MBP 13inch?

    Hey Robert,

I gave up on 10.11.5 and downgraded to 10.10.5. I'm hoping this thread will stay alive until Apple fixes the freeze. I'll stay on Yosemite until Apple solves this one.

It's taken a few days of no freezing on 10.10.5 before finally feeling safe on my MBP.  Maybe 10.12 later this Fall will fix it once and for all. Last week Apple released a statement saying to those experiencing freezing to remove FLASH from their system and upgraded to the latest OS. Boy did they get alot of s&&it on the net about that solution.

Hi. My fan rpms are now set at 85% (all). It seems El Capitan isn't revving up the fans high enough upon bootup (or restart) even though the sensors are detecting very high non-optimal temperatures (especially for the GPU). Upon boot up, I've setup a small desk fan in the middle at the back (as close as possible to the Apple Logo) and blast it full blast, until OS X loads Macs Fan Control. Once it's revving up, I switch off the fan at the back (it's a small fan like a Vornado only this one is by Honeywell- makers of fans for US missiles to cool its insides, it seems- though that may not be the exact fan) coz' not switching the fan off seems to make it hotter, messing up the airflow at 85% rpm (I've tried lower percentages like 50%, 53%, 60%, 70%, 75% & 80%). If you can full blast the fans, that may even be better but it may also wear out the fans too soon and that would be more difficult. If you can paste a radiator at the whole back, that might work better maybe (liquid cooing:-) and don't need to rev up the fans too much or need a small fan for bootup.

    God bless. Rev. 21:4

    boot into safe mode

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

then launch safari holding down the shift key

if the behavior persists reboot and post an etrecheck report
