Q: Constant kernel panics

I have a late 2014 Mac Mini with fusion drive that has become completely unreliable in the past week.  Have experienced approximately 12 kernel panics in past 7 days.  What I have tried so far:  1) removed external hard drive   2) uninstalled Avast antivirus (this was installed last year, and didn't appear to have any connection to the kernel panics, but i uninstalled anyway   3) verified hard drive - no errors   4) fixed permissions   5) booted and worked in safe mode for a time - eventually whole system locked up requiring reboot   6) created a new user and logged in under that account - still had panic

All panics so far have been while surfing the web in Safari...

I had not loaded any new software on computer in at least 6 or so days before the first panic.  No other programs  (other than Safari) are running when the panics occur.

Here is the latest Panic log (they have all looked basically exactly the same, i.e. type 14=page fault)

If you are using and Bluetooth devices remove then and use USB connected mouse and keyboard.

    That is because

    - Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

    About NVRAM and PRAM

    - Try starting in Safe Mode

OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

    - Boot to Recovery and repair the startup disk

OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

    Run Apple Hardware Test

Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

    - If it is repairable reinstall the OSX

How to reinstall OS X on your Mac - Apple Support

    - If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.

Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

so - if it is my Apple BT Keyboard, would that mean I can no longer use BT on the computer?  That would suck... Would like to be able to use bt keyboard and mouse...

I did find 2 of my kernel panics had a different last load kext:

    last loaded kext at 172254581005201: com.apple.driver.AppleUSBCDC  4.3.3b1 (addr 0xffffff7f8e50c000, size 20480)

I think I had usb keyboard and mouse connected to computer in addition to my BT keyboard and mouse when these 2 kernel panics occurred, as well as my usb external hard drive.  Now, and for the last 3-4 kernel panics, I don't have any usb devices hooked up at all.

I am leaning towards this probably being hardware related - does that seem most likely?

I am going to do an erase and reinstall of OS X next to see if the panics continue.

    Thanks,

Yes it could a hardware test. I would run Apple hardware test before a reinstall.

Just not that if AHT does not find problems there still could be a hardware problem

Yes - I did try to do the hardware test at least 3 times - but for some reason it would never seem to register that I had the d key pressed and it would just reboot normally.  I gave up on that and am in the process of reinstalling OSX now.  Maybe I should try the hardware test again after I am finished reinstalling?

I would try to run AHT after reinstall OSX. It is easy to run AHT.

That kind of panic may be caused by a bug in OS X, or else by a hardware fault. I suggest that you upgrade to the current version ("El Capitan") in the App Store and see whether the panics stop.

Before upgrading, check that all your most important third-party software is up to date and compatible with the current OS X. Very old versions of Microsoft and Adobe products, for example, may not be compatible. The developer's website is the best source for that information.

Incompatible third-party software causes almost all problems with OS X upgrades.

Finally, back up all data, and be sure you know how to restore if you don't like the results of the upgrade.

If you have a spare storage device with enough capacity, you can copy the startup volume to it in Disk Utility, then start up from it and upgrade. Then, if you don't like the results, all you have to do is change the setting in the Startup Disk preference pane and restart.

I just thought I would follow up on my original post just in case it is helpful to someone out there with a similar problem.  I figured out the cause of my kernel panics.  After starting over on my mini with a completely fresh install of OS X, not even bringing anything in from iCloud, I ran the computer for a while and thought all was good.  I decided to install the Flash plugin for Safari, and within an hour I had another kernel panic.  I don't have ANY other third party programs or plugins installed on the computer.  It could have just been coincidence, but I decided to restart from scratch again, and this time I have not installed Flash.

10 days later - not a single problem of any kind - other than not being able to view Flash content in Safari.  I haven't tried any other browsers, but I figure I can live without Flash if it keeps my computer from crashing daily...

I have had this same problem with my Mac Mini for a couple of years, and always suspected it was flash.  Just downloaded El Capitan and using Google Chrome I was asked if I wanted to turn flash off - I did and it appears, at least initially, do be working fine.

I'm wondering though - I prefer to use flash.  Have you found a further solution to this problem so you can use flash?
