Not clear what you are asking. Putting your phone on A.M. for 2 or 3 hours when you are in a "no service" area helps battery life as the phone does not have to continue to check for service however toggling A.M. on and off ever few minutes probably hurts. Is that what you were asking?

I mean like when you go to work/school and you put it on airplane mode for those 5-6 hours everyday. Will that harm the battery life in the long run?

At my summer job I always put my phone in airplane mode during my shift as I was not allowed to have my phone with me and it was stored in an area with bad reception. Sometimes I forgot to do this and it would drop 10-20% (vs. maybe 1% in airplane mode). It will not harm battery life in the long run if you use airplane mode for a few hours like that every day.

No, it won't hurt the battery life. It should actually help it, because it's not using battery to hunt for connection signals.
