Office 2011 and 2016 for Mac work with OS X El Capitan, so you can install Office 2011 if you purchased it. Remember to update it to the most recent version.

    Mendel:

Thank you for your prompt reply.  However, how can one update the MS Office apps if they are saved to an external hard drive, and when you drag them to the OS 10.11 desktop, a white circle with a line through it, appears in the app symbol with the message "Power PCs cannot be supported?"  Are there other ways to execute an update for MS Office apps on an external hard drive?

    Thank you.

You need the Office installer to install Office 2011 on your Mac. Unfortunately, drag and drop does not work with Microsoft Office. After doing that, Microsoft AutoUpdate should appear the first time you open a Office app, and it will let you install the updates.
