iOS 9.3 iTunes flags songs as explicit when they are not, how can I disable?

So I'm in the car, my kid is crying her eyes out, I'm trying to put on some music to soothe her but every song on her favorite album is coming up as explicit?! This has never happened before, the album always played without issue. The only change I can see was I've updated to 9.3 on my iPhone 6.

Under Settings > General > Restrictions I've always had it turned off. I turned it on, then turned off Explicit and then turned it back on. I backed out and disabled restrictions and for the moment it seems to be working.

Anyone else had this problem or heard of it?

UPDATE: Just got the error again, so it's not fixed 😟

This item can't be played because it contains explicit content.

I'm having this too.

Going from Restrictions Off to Restrictions On (but all allowed) seems to have worked for me... For now. Not sure if it's a permanent solution.

I'm also getting it pop up random times during long audio tracks (e.g. a 2 hour podcast downloaded from Soundcloud) - something without any rating. It also stops the music, forcing me to unlock the phone, find the track, and re-start it, then click past the warning, which is frustrating.

Maybe it's fixed in 9.3.1?

Me too! iPhone 5, iOS9.3.

Started happening to me this morning when I was listening to a track that was 3.5 hours long. The track is one I've put in iTunes on my Mac myself (it's an mp3 of a radio show I listen to), allowed to upload to iCloud Music Library and then downloaded onto the iPhone 5 itself.

The warning would only disappear when I disabled Restrictions entirely - something which I don't really want to do as I like to disable Apple Music Connect so that the 'Playlists' tab returns to the Music app at the bottom.

I'm also wondering whether 9.3.1 fixes this, so I'm in the process of updating as we speak. I'll let you know if it does in my experience!

Keep experiencing this issue when I download radio shows from Bubba the Love Sponge. Despite being tame enough to air on FM radio, despite me having all content restrictions turned off, iTunes on iPhone will pop up an explicit content warning. Annoying enough on its own, but when streaming via usb to stereo will actually stop playback and switch to normal music (unless screen is unlocked and then playback just plain stops).

Issue under 9.3 and 9.3.1. Have tried advice located earlier in this thread.

9.3.1 is still broken.

I reset Restrictions and all was fine. For a while. Then the pop-up appeared again and the music stopped.

As a phone, iPhone 6 is poor. I know the voice data is highly compressed - but computers can fix that a bit. The last decent portable phone was the early Blackberry.

It's a Communication Device with as many bells and whistles that the current technology will allow. The technology doesn't have to be good (and it isn't - there's always a new release that improves prior version.).

As a music player it fails for at least two reasons:

  • It won't play flac, only m4a (for uncompressed music). Converting flac to m4a doubles it's size!
  • There's no reasonably easy way to override the DAC with a good external one using the lightening cable. Apple won't approve an OTG lightening to micro USB cable.
  • There's insufficient testing before releasing software -- and no admission of responsibility when an obvious, significant problem prevents the User from enjoying his/her $600 purchase.

Rant ends - but the problems continue.

I too fell victim to this curious plague. Having chosen the extreme route of resetting my iPhone 6+ settings, I can rejoice in uncoupling the random errors preventing playback and deplore the chore of reconfiguring everything.

At your own risk: Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings

Since the update I have issues with Explicit, even though it is switched off.

I do not have explicit music on my phone but the new IOS thinks I do!

When I play music it randomly decides its explicit and says not allowed.

The only thing that seems to temporarily work is to toggle restrictions on and then off, that can give me a few hours or a day if I am lucky of being able to listen to music uninterrupted, then it all starts again!!!!

So far I have done the following as directed by Apple:

All restrictions are off.

Cleared all of my database from the phone and reinstalled 3 times.

A forth time set up as a new phone.

Reset the firmware and reloaded followed by a reloading of IOS.

I have visited Apple in Hong Kong, USA and UK.

All restrictions have been removed from my service provider, multiple phone calls to them to ensure this has been done.

Monday 30th May 2016 the phone was exchanged, and within a few hours I have the same issue.

I have spent a massive amount of time and energy on the telephone and visiting Apple stores trying to resolve this nuisance created since the update.

Apple care don't have a solution and appear to not care at all, saying they will call back but often don't bother!!!

The internet is full of this issue that is being denied by Apple.

Please don't tell me I am the only one as this would be economical with the truth, and is wholly unacceptable.

THIS IS CLEARLY YOUR UPDATE LATEST UPATE TO IOS 9.3.2 AND WISH TO KNOW WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE RESOLVED???

Can I finally say that I have used iPhone through the generations, but this is leaving me with a very bad taste in my mouth as I cannot play my music unhindered on this very expensive piece of equipment

Look forward to you offering a realistic solution and reply.

I, too, am having this problem. It is driving me nuts and makes it impossible (or dangerous) to listen to tracks while driving a car. It happens with harmless CD tracks that I ripped in in 2011 and have had on my iPhone 6 since Oct of 2014 and have played flawlessly until about a month ago. I end up getting two variants of this message - one on which pressing "Allow" lets the track continue (at least for a few more minutes) and another for which pressing "Restrictions" takes me to a passcode entry screen and then into the Settings>General>Restrictions screen on which I have no restrictions and never have had any. Responding to either of these screens does no good, as I just get the same message again later on. I've tried all manner of turning various restrictions on and off in a multitude of combinations, all to no avail.

I have spent a considerable amount of time on the phone with an AppleCare "senior advisor" who, though polite and generally knowledgeable, hadn't the faintest idea how to stop this. She later sent me an email with suggestions that were to no avail. I am loath to wipe and then set my phone up anew, without restoring from a backup, as I will lose all data stored in applications and all of the watch faces that I've carefully set up for my Apple Watch.

Another odd quirk is that sometimes pressing Allow causes the playlist order to get scrambled. Stranger still is that after a few more instances of this annoying problem halting playback, a press of Allow will magically restore the playlist order to my original order. I have kept screen snaps to show this.

I'm having the exact same issue but it only seems to be happening in the last 2 days for me. It's happening across the board for me but I have a playlist I use on a very regular basis with 10 songs on it. The "explicit" warning pops up at random on random songs. It only started happening yesterday when I had to recopy my playlist from iTunes to my iPhone 6s (silly me deleted it by accident).

Now it appears to be happening to any list I play. A response would be nice at this point or an update that fixes it.

FYI, I just looked and I'm on 9.3.2
