burning dvd on el capitan

Hello

does anyone know how to burn movies and to make it playable to any dvd. also do I have to use a software like BURN(which I read that will not work on EL CAPITAN) or TOAST? Is there any other way instead of paying for a software?

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)

iDVD does not work reliably for me on El Capitan; it even has "fits" on Yosemite. The last reliable OS for me is Mavericks for the iLife apps (and I still use iMovie HD 06 because it is simply the best version out there).

@ anakfirstborn:

The new versions of iMovie no longer offer an option to burn - they are geared toward the cloud/online sharing. You can still export your movie from there - choose export/save to file and pick the best option available. You will get a file which you can then use with a burn software such as Roxio Toast (or Burn - I have not tried that with El Capitan as I use Toast) to burn DVDs.

Do you know if I can burn movies I downloaded using my external blu ray/ dvd writer (LG ULTRA SLIM PORTABLE BLU RAY WRITER). Or even just videos I made with my iphone6. I have tried several times using some common ways I found on youtube. But each time it did not play onto another DVD player? I was able to burn my downloaded movie onto a dvd-r and play it back on my IMAC but not anywhere else ( have not tried my vids from my IPHONE 6).

I am not aware of any free burn software - you might want to try checking on google or the app store. I've only used either iDVD or Roxio Toast; I tried Burn and it worked ok, but do not know if it will work with El Capitan.

As for burning anything: You need a proper burn software if you want to have a DVD that can be played in any player; some processes will allow you to watch it on the computer, but not in a player. By the way, if the source is commercial, we are not allowed to discuss it here due to DRM/copyright issues.

thanks for the info BABOWA. I am new to this IMAC community and I am finding new roads and issues. I recently bought an IMAC( this is my first apple products I bought in my life). I like a lot of the features but also don't like the new software updates such as putting everything on ICLOUD. I am old school and like to have stuff on a hardcopy. Do you have an apple superdrive or a third party like me? thanks for replying to me so quickly also, I appreciate it a lot.

My current iMac no longer has a Superdrive; I have an OWC external drive:

I was going to link to a more direct page, but I saw the announcement on this page about the special offer of Toast with any purchase - that appears to be a good deal. Anyway, click on external solutions and check through those.

Keeping your files, such as photos, videos and music in iCloud is strictly optional. It's also not a good idea to keep them only in iCloud - you should also keep them on your iMac.

The real purpose and strength of iCloud in allowing to keep in sync your computer and all devices (addressbook, messages, links, etc) and in providing access to your files (photos, documents, etc) on any device, at any time.

That depends on the file format that the downloaded movies are in. If you refer to normal purchased movies, then, no. You would only be able to burn them on a disk as data. They would not be playable in a DVD player.

Mac does not have built-in support for Blueray, only DVDs.

A more general, question... Why do you need to burn them onto a DVD disk? If you have the files on your iMac and want to watch them on your TV, there are ways to do that. Via Apple TV is one, connecting via HDMI cable or Wi-Fi are others. To watch your videos on your iPhone, use iTunes to copy them to the device. If it's home videos that you made, keeping them in iCloud Photo Library would be an easy way to have access to them, without permanently taking up storage space on the phone.

I also still burn DVDs - prefer watching them on my large HDTV (I certainly wouldn't want to watch a movie on a tiny screen) and, I already have a DVD player so there is no need to buy another toy (Apple TV) - it doesn't do anything I'm interested in. I also burn DVDs for friends and family as they prefer having a DVD. I will never upload any content online anywhere as it appears to be a general habit of people to download anything they see online even if it isn't theirs. Well, if they want a copy of a movie I've spent a lot of time to put together, they can pay for it. So, for some of us, DVDs are still important.
