Apple Pay & Rewards Cards

We're supposed to be able to add rewards cards to Apple Pay, but what rewards cards, exactly, are eligible? Does it have to be an actual payment method that has some sort of rewards/perks associated with it? Or can it be a standalone rewards card, i.e. the cashier scans it and a discount is applied to your purchase? I'm trying to add the latter, without success. Using the camera method, it is not accepted even when the card is centered in the viewfinder, and using the manual method of entering the card number, it says that the card is not from an issuer that supports Apple Pay. In the list of supported cards, it only shows actual banks, not a single merchant with a rewards program.

My Walgreens card is in my Wallet, but it is not actually part of Apple Pay. It is listed under "Passes" instead of Pay, just like my Starbuck's card is. That is the only one I know of. At the bottom of the bank list Apple Pay participating banks and store cards - Apple Support It shows Kohl's department store card as one. I've not been able to load anything else. I've not seen a list anywhere either.

Hmmm, that's odd, are there really only two that support Apple Pay at this time? I would think that they wouldn't even roll out the feature until at least a good-sized handful of stores supported it.

I loaded my Kohl's card into Wallet, but I must say that Kohl's doesn't really make it easy. Unlike the other credit cards I added, they wanted a verification code, which never appeared. It took a phone call to Kohl's and a lengthy wait before someone there pushed a button or something and verified the card for me. I do find it very useful to have my loyalty cards in Wallet, in addition to credit cards. It's very easy to get to them when needed, and they take up no extra space in my physical wallet.
