Q: Why can't my ipod touch connect to the update server

I've tried every solution proffered and they're all either years and years out of date or concerned obvious irrelevancies like 'are you even connected to the internet' – so far I'm trying to update my ipod touch to be compatible with an app that won't run on 4.2.1 and while I can easily connect to the app store, the update server is impossible to connect to. Why, is never said; only 'try later' which was equally useless.

I'm running 10.6.8 and this is the first problem I've ever had where itunes has completely failed to function. Is there any recourse whatsoever or am I just going to have to accept that I'm never going to be able to run any newer apps on my ipod? It's disappointing to say the least

It also needs to be said that this is the first problem I have ever had connecting to any server, so this 'check your network settings' nonsense tells me nothing.

I can neither connect to update any device, nor itunes itself – which is going to become an enormous issue if I ever need to restore anything. Can anybody else connect, is the server just down or something?

    Try:

    - Powering off and then back on your router.

    - iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server

    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers

    Public DNS — Google Developers

    OpenDNS IP Addresses

    - For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem

    - Try on another computer/network

    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

Note that if you have a 2G iPod that model tops out at iOS 4.2.1

    Identifying iPod models

    iPod touch (3rd generation)

iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.

The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

Resetting the router and computer both effected nothing, and I'm not about to reinstall itunes with a 101gb library to contend with.

It looks like I have a 2nd generation iPod touch, so the initial problem with the app is more or less immaterial now. However, the problem with updating in general still remains. I can't update itunes, or anything requiring a connection to the update server.

Google's public DNS functioned as normal with browsing, but still couldn't connect to the update server. Public wi-fi hotspots saw no change either.

I'm wondering at this point has the server changed and itunes is being misdirected? It couldn't just be a matter of 'wait and try later' for this long

Try logging in as another user as a test

    Try creating another network location

Logging in as guest saw no change....neither did different network locations.

Now in the time it took to test that, I was prompted for an update on last.fm and further updates were automatically downloaded to the HD/Library/Updates folder. So clearly it's only the itunes server that is unable to connect ––– so at this point I have to ask again, is anybody else experiencing the same? Because I can't rule out that it's on the server's side if no solution is fixing the problem, yet it's only itunes that is experiencing a problem

I have not seen any recent post with problem of not being able to connect to update server.

Apple is not reporting any problems

At this point the only thing I haven't tried is a complete reinstallation......which I would prefer not to attempt unless there's absolutely no other option

At a certain point a few years ago I just stopped updates altogether unless it was necessary (such as now) ––– perhaps it's too far out of date now to even connect at all? I can't imagine what else would make it incompatible
