Hi,
Technically it is not pink but red.
As your Send is Green it is either an AIM, Yahoo, Bonjour or Jabber chat or possibly an SMS (Text) using your iMessages ID.
As the Bonjour account cannot do Group chats we can eliminate that account (even though it shows as Off line in the lower left of the Pic).
The Text Field, if the account was logged on, would list the Account in that space.
This Pic is for an iMessages chat/Conversation.
The Account being used to Send may also not appear if you type a Space.
The fact that several chats seems to involve the same people and they also do not have pics suggests it is a Chat Account that is getting the pics from the Server and not the Contacts App
I would open Messages > Preferences and check the Account is ticked in the "Enable this Account" box.
My guess would be an AIM account.
Or the SMS link to the iPhone has become corrupt and needs resetting.

What happens when you try to send a message?
The progress bar hangs at 95% for a few minutes, then finally fails "message not delivered." This is some sort of iCloud connection issue, I believe. Problem, I didn't change any preferences in iCloud or anywhere else.
