Q: Facetime audio. I can hear my contact but they can't hear me. What settings should I have?

I can successfully connect via FaceTime Audio (and Video) by clicking in the Contacts App. I can hear (and see) them but they can't hear me. I have System Prefs for Sounds set at Internal Speakers and Internal Microphone. Sound is not 'muted'. What am I doing wrong?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

First, please take the steps that have been suggested to others by Apple Support.

Launch the Photo Booth application and record a video of yourself speaking. Play back the video. Do you hear anything?

If sound is working in Photo Booth, go back to FaceTime and make an audio call. During the call, switch to video. If sound works now, end the call and make a video call.

If there's no sound in Photo Booth, see below.

Please open the Sound pane in System Preferences and select the Input tab. Select the input device you want (it should be highighted in the list) and move the Input volume slider all the way to the right.

Speak into the microphone. You shouldn't have to yell. Does the Input level meter react?

If not, and if there are any other input devices in the list, do they work? What are they?

Many thanks, Linc, for your reply. Sorry for the delay in responding - busy time here. I found the other Apple Support suggestions you mentioned and initially made little progress but then noticed an OS update was available (from 10.11.3 to 10.11.4) and installed that. During the installation, of course, there was a shut-down and re-boot. I think it must have been the re-boot which cured the problem. Although I made no changes to the System Preferences the other suggestions  gave useful background information. I did initially search for relevant posts before posting  my query but hadn't managed to find them. They became evident after your response. I guess I was using ineffective search criteria. Thanks again for your help.
