Q: Help!  Keep Getting pop-ups with ERROR CODE: sec_error_X1X510_A

I have a late 2012 iMAC, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB, El Capitan iOS

When using Safari, Google home page, I type a domain and it goes to what I believe is a bogus Apple Support pop-up window with ERROR CODE: sec_error_X1X510_A.

Need help fixing this. Thx

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Unfortunately you have made a mess of your computer, first yes you do have adware installed, in the report there is an option to remove it. Re-run the report and click where it says remove adware. Next is you have MacKeeper installed, MacKeeper is considered malware by experienced users on these forums. OS X does NOT need any antivirus, cleaning or ANY third party maintenance utilities to run well. OS X runs best if left totally alone. Conact the deverlopers of MacKeeper for instructions on how to uninstall it. Then follow their directions and run another EtreCheck report and look for any evidence of MacKeeper. If you find any then your best option is starting over and doing an Erase and Install and starting over.

Finally, there is no evidence you are backing up the computer.  This at best is foolish and at worst you are at high risk of losing all of the data on the computer including photos, music, financial records etc.. Operating ANY computer without a sound backup plan is dangerous at best. Get an external HD (I recommend an OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro and begin using Time Machine to backup your computer before you do ANYTHING else.

    Good luck.

I guess this is what they call tough love.  Starting looking for a larger External Backup Drive after I looked over the report.  Thank you so much.  I will jump on all your recommendations immediately.

Your welcome and good luck. If you are like a lot of users you may have come from a PC background where using AV and other cleaning software was necessary. It's not uncommon for some of those folks to treat their Macs like a PCs, however Macs are not PCs, thank heavens. OS X is an extremely elegant operating system and as stated doesn't require any add-ons to run well.

    Best of luck.

The report indicates 2 things that scare me, first you are running 10.6.7, you haven't even updated to 10.6.8. This means you are not getting any security updates on the computer because Apple stopped updating SL some years ago. You also are using Google Chrome which is not secure by design, consider using Safari.

Next, you have ad-ware installed. You can read the directions in Stop pop-up ads and adware in Safari - Apple Support  for help in removing them.
