How can I copy AVCHD files from my Sony Handicam without having to use Quicktime?

On my old iMac i'd hook my Sony Handcam up with a USB cable. I'd copy and paste from the video camera to a file on my computer. To view these files I would view them through VLC player. If I used Quicktime I would have video and no sound. After importing, I would then convert the files using Wondershare and would then import into iMovie.

Now that i've upgraded to a new iMac I can't do that anymore. Quicktime opens and eventually, some 15 minutes later, a Quicktime window opens and shows each of the video files on my video camera but I can't work out where to go from there. There is no import option and I don't simply want to click okay as I don't know what it will do. I have some 30gb of video on this video camera.

So, I don't want Quicktime to be the default program to download through. How do I stop this happening?

Also, how do I import these files from my video camera?

Thank you
